About this game

Hedge Hop moves one square per press, across five road lanes and five river lanes to the burrows in the hedge at the top. Each new level reshuffles the lanes and makes them faster, up to a speed cap.

Goal: Fill all five burrows to clear the level, scoring for every new row reached, each burrow, any beetle you catch and the level bonus.

Hedge Hop is an original road crossing game built for the browser in the style of 1980s arcade cabinets: pixel art, a chiptune soundtrack and CRT scanlines, all generated in code. It is free, has no ads and needs no download or account.

What’s inside

  • Endless levels with faster lanes, up to a cap
  • 5 burrows to fill per level
  • Road lanes of cars, vans, trucks and bikes
  • River lanes of logs and turtles, some of which dive
  • A 60-second timer for each trip to the hedge
  • 3 lives
Players
1 player.
On a phone
Swipe in any direction to hop, tap to hop forward, or use the small four-way pad in the bottom-left corner; tapping the help text at the lower right pauses.
Round length
A level usually takes 1-3 minutes, and a run lasts until your three lives are gone.

Tips

  • Turtles in the second and fourth river rows can dive; they turn see-through just before going under, so hop off when they fade.
  • A beetle sitting in an empty burrow is worth 200 extra if you land there, but a burrow with a snake in it costs a life, so wait for it to leave.
  • Line up squarely with a burrow: hopping into the hedge between burrows, or into one already filled, counts as a crash.

Questions

Is there a time limit in Hedge Hop?

Yes. Each trip has a 60-second bar that resets when you reach a burrow or lose a life. If it runs out, you lose a life.

What happens if I ride a log off the screen?

You fall in the river and lose a life, so hop forward or back before your log or turtle carries you past the edge.
