About this game
Letter Lock frames the five-letter guessing puzzle as a vault: each guess turns a row of tumblers, and every pin shows whether a letter is set, loose or dead. The answer list holds 1,540 common words.
Goal: Open the lock by finding the hidden word within six guesses: green means the right letter in the right spot, gold means the letter is elsewhere in the word, dark means it is not in the word.
Letter Lock is an original daily word puzzle built for the browser in the style of 1980s arcade cabinets: pixel art, a chiptune soundtrack and CRT scanlines, all generated in code. It is free, has no ads and needs no download or account.
What’s inside
- Daily lock: the same word for everyone, changing at midnight UTC
- Practice: unlimited random words
- Hard mode: every revealed clue must be used in later guesses
- Separate stats and streaks for daily and practice, with a turns-to-open chart
- Copyable result grid, without letters, for sharing
- Players
- 1 player.
- On a phone
- Tap the on-screen keyboard; holding a phone upright adds a larger keyboard below the board, and tapping the Pause label at the top pauses.
- Round length
- A puzzle usually takes 2-5 minutes: one daily word a day, and as many practice words as you like.
Tips
- If you type a letter twice and only one copy lights up, the word has just one of that letter; the extra copy goes dark.
- Hard mode can only be switched on or off before the first guess of a puzzle.
- Your daily streak counts consecutive days, so skipping a day resets it even without a loss.
Questions
When does the Letter Lock daily word change?
At midnight UTC. The result screen shows a countdown to the next one, and an unfinished daily is saved in your browser so you can come back to it.
Why does P not pause the game?
While you are guessing, P and M are letters, so press Esc to pause and click the Mute label to mute.
