About this game
Rockfield draws everything in thin glowing lines on a black field. Your ship drifts, so every burst of thrust has to be undone by turning around, and a low heartbeat speeds up as the rocks thin out.
Goal: Clear wave after wave of rocks and score as many points as you can before your ships run out.
Rockfield is an original space shooter built for the browser in the style of 1980s arcade cabinets: pixel art, a chiptune soundtrack and CRT scanlines, all generated in code. It is free, has no ads and needs no download or account.
What’s inside
- Endless waves: wave 1 has 4 large rocks, and each wave adds one more, up to 11
- Rocks split large to medium to small, worth 20, 50 and 100 points
- Large saucer worth 200; a small saucer worth 1,000 can appear from wave 2
- 3 ships to start, plus an extra ship every 10,000 points
- Players
- 1 player
- On a phone
- On-screen buttons appear on a phone: left and right turn buttons at bottom left, and Jump, Thrust and Fire at bottom right, which you can press together. Tap the HI score at the top centre to pause.
- Round length
- A game usually lasts 3-8 minutes, depending on how many waves you survive.
Tips
- Only 4 of your shots can be on screen at once, so short, aimed bursts beat holding fire.
- Shots and rocks wrap around the screen edges, so you can hit a rock from the far side without chasing it.
- Save hyperspace for when a crash is certain, since you land at a random spot and one jump in ten destroys the ship.
Questions
How do I get an extra ship in Rockfield?
You earn one every 10,000 points. A small saucer is worth 1,000, so it is the fastest way there.
Is hyperspace safe in Rockfield?
No. You land somewhere random after a short delay, and there is a 10 percent chance the ship is destroyed when you arrive. It also has a short cooldown.
